If not, feel free to choose Someone Else and start the process. As I said before, there are all kinds of different relationship levels when it comes to working with Deities. You can target local Spirits, or a Deity you like the sound of, or choose a Deity based upon what you think your life best represents.. If you could have a mentor, what would they be into? What parts of your life are most important to you? You can also get various books about all kinds of Deities, but understand that these are only starting points for your own research.
Choose a Deity the way you should choose a pet — with careful thought, research, and considering how this new addition to the family will fit into your life. Well, duh. Most, if not all, of the cultures that surrounded these Deities are dead. So much of even Greek and Roman worship is lost, never mind the difficulty of researching Deities of various Celtic Tribes who wrote little and left little. There are indeed modern books about certain Deities that you can find on Google, and the good ones should have pages of references that will lead you to first hand sources.
Keep asking, and Someone will show up for you. Your email address will not be published. Skip to content Ready to work with me? How to Choose a Deity This blog post is not about choosing a particular Deity for something that you need. To point out that you will have some kind of higher bond with one particular Deity, and that you should maintain that when you find it.
The stronger your relationship, the more likely you are to get what you want out of it. How do I know which one? How do I actually choose a Deity? I can be, under specific circumstances. I'm convincing when I need to be. I'm an open book. I'm totally untrustworthy, but still somehow trusted. I'll be your confidant. I can always be trusted to do the unexpected. I'm on an even keel. I'm constantly changing; very protean. The world changes in relation to me, but I remain the same.
Sometimes, but some of the time they turn to me just because they are afraid of messing up. Well, it's either binary, or it isn't, right?
It's all shades of gray. Certain things, like gender roles, are totally binary to me. Not everything is one way or another, and it isn't useful to impose such a worldview. Anyone who isn't with me. Evil is a myth. The world is inherently evil. Evil exists where there is privation. We are fiercely loyal to each other. We communicate often.
I spend all my time with them. We are distant. No, they're all true. A few They're all true. Some yes. They are very hurtful. There are so many stories about me, I can't keep track of them all. A hoodie. A suit. A skirt. A robe. Seizing opportunities. Cutting deals. Managing the team. How else would I view it?! Yes, of course. I get what's mine! No, it needn't be that way! No, that view is an illusion. How it inspires action. How it holds value.
How it pulls people together. I love Her to bits. She feels like home to me. She is the thread that runs through my spiritual practice, tying it all together, pushing me to try certain courses and have certain experiences. However, in the last year and a bit I have been working a lot with the energies of the Love Goddesses — Aphrodite, Rhiannon and Venus — and I feel there is a strong important truth there too.
In my practice, every now and again I do deep work with Yemanja and Oshun. Tell them they are great and start including them in your life! You offer them your devotion, your passion and commitment: take time to hang out with them, think of them in your day to day life, chat to them in the mornings, leave them offerings, play their favourite songs, read books about them… you bring their energy into your life.
Relationships are not a one way street. You gotta work for it. If you have chosen a patron deity who you are head over heels for and super excited about, meditating with them, leaving them offerings, drawing little pictures and playing music that reminds you of them or whatever it is you are up to is going to be so much fun!
You are going to want to do it! Here we are getting back to the love thing. If you love your deity, you are going to have the best time connecting with them and you are going to want to do it lots.
Of course, each individual deity has their own activities that they are master of, so of course you can do those too! If Artemis is your patron, nature walks could be a part of your devotion to Her — maybe you could have a go at archery too. If Venus is your patron, you could honour Her by eating dinner by candlelight, savouring every bite.
If Yemanja is your patron, you could honour Her by taking sea salt baths and donating to Ocean Conservation charities. If Hecate is your patron, you could leave her offerings at the cross roads, or start learning the Tarot in Her honour. And then I noticed all the other little magical synchronicities that had happened in the past that I just had not paid attention to.
If you are expecting a dramatic supernatural occurrence, but have not spent time noticing the ways in which spirit talks to you or developing your intuition or so importantly learnt to trust your intuition, how are you going to notice a magical sign?
How strong are your magical spidey senses? Can you be still enough to hear the subtle whispers of the divine, or are you always running at a mile a minute? Magic is subtle.
You invite them to your rituals and spellcastings. You let them become your strength, your mainline to the Divine. You let them touch your life and transform you in the ways they wish.
