The Inn and Restaurant have played host to numerous U. In , the town attracted a famous building of a different sort, when Andrew Carnegie provided funds to build a Carnegie library in Lebanon. This too still stands and is in operation — just across the street from the Golden Lamb. The preservation of the town is rather remarkable. In just a few blocks drive, one can see a vast variety of architecture including Federal, Gothic, Victorian, Craftsman, and Greek Revival.
One of the best examples of the latter is the Glendower Mansion which was built in the s and can be toured today. Lebanon is the county seat of Warren County, Ohio. In , Ichabod Corwin became the town's first resident even though Lebanon did not officially exist until The community had 1, residents in The principal reason for its growth was Lebanon's location on the Warren County Canal and along three improved roads connecting Lebanon with Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
The most attractive suburbs lie north and east both inside and outside the beltway; names like Montgomery, Evendale, Blue Ash, Loveland, Kenwood, and yes, Mason should be on the radar of those looking at the area. On the downside, racial tensions, inner city crime and landmark battles between conservative and progressive elements over arts and pornography have made national headlines.
The city has a long major-league sports tradition that is more accessible and less expensive to attend—even when the teams are winning—than most cities. Beyond the city, Hamilton County has an outstanding park system. The city has a very attractive cost of living profile for what is offered. The city itself is located in the narrow, relatively steep-sided valley of the Ohio River. The Mill Creek, Licking River, and Miami River valleys join the Ohio with broad tributary valleys giving way to hills and plateaus on both sides of the Ohio.
Vegetation is mixed farmland and deciduous woods. The climate is continental with a wide range of temperatures from winter to summer. Often near the dividing line between cooler northern air and moist Gulf air, temperature and precipitation changes are frequent. Winters are moderately cold with periods of extensive cloudiness. It has embraced its historic district with the refurbishing of the pre-civil war architecture. Lebanon contains numerous antique shops with specialty boutiques and restaurants dotted throughout the town. I turned onto a brick alleyway and found my way to a small park with an old bandstand. During my tour each turn offered another avenue of antique shops, restaurants and points of interest. Lebanon City Park above was dedicated as a city park in with the provision that it be preserved as a public space to be enjoyed by all.
Throughout the city you will find historic markers explaining the history and importance of beautifully restored homes. With ample parking and friendly people Lebanon beckons you.
