Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary n. A bone of the human body which was supposed by certain Rabbinical writers to be indestructible. Its location was a matter of dispute. It may also mean "bone," particularly a bone of the spine, and might be applied to a rocky height supposed to resemble a backbone Lagarde, Uebersicht. Winckler explains it by Aramaic laudh, "asylum," which might be suitably applied to a sanctuary Geschichte Israels.
Cheyne EB, under the word would derive it by corruption from chalutsah, "strong city. It has been thought that Joshua contradicts this, and that the two places were distinct.
Referring to Genesis , we find that the name Bethel was given to "the place," ha-maqom, i. The name of the city as distinguished from "the place" was Luz. As the fame of the sanctuary grew, we may suppose, its name overshadowed, and finally superseded, that of the neighboring town. The memory of the ancient nomenclature persisting among the people sufficiently explains the allusions in the passages cited.
No satisfactory identification has been suggested. Ewing Strong's Hebrew The ancient name of a royal Canaanitish city near the site of Bethel Genesis ; , on the border of Benjamin Joshua Here Jacob halted, and had a prophetic vision. The Sanctuary: The town was originally called Luz Genesis , etc. When Jacob came hither on his way to Paddan-aram we are told that he lighted upon "the place" Genesis The Hebrew maqom, like the cognate Arabic maqam, denotes a sacred place or sanctuary.
The maqom was doubtless that at which Abraham had sacrificed, East of the town. In the morning Jacob set up "for a pillar" the stone which had served as his pillow Genesis ; see PILLAR, matstsebhah , poured oil upon it and called the name of the place Bethel, "house of God"; that is, of God whose epiphany was for him associated with the pillar.
This spot became a center of great interest, lending growing importance to the town. In process of time the name Luz disappeared, giving place to that of the adjoining sanctuary, town and sanctuary being identified. Jacob revisited the place on his return from Paddan-aram; here Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried under "the oak" Genesis f.
Probably on rising ground East of Bethel Abraham and Lot stood to view the uninviting highlands and the rich lands of the Jordan valley Genesis History: Bethel was a royal city of the Canaanites Joshua It appears to have been captured by Joshua , and it was allotted to Benjamin Joshua Joshua And the border passed along from thence to Luz , to the side of Luz --the same is Beth-el--southward; and the border went down to Atroth-addar, by Joshua And the border passed along from thence to Luz , to the side of Luz the same is Beth-el , southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar It seems impossible to discover with precision whether Luz and Bethel represent one and the same town--the former the Canannite, the latter the Hebrew, name--or whether they were distinct places, though in close proximity.
The most probable conclusion is that the two places were, during the times preceding the conquest, distinct, Luz being the city and Bethel the pillar and altar of Jacob that after the destruction of Luz by the tribe of Ephraim the town of Bethel arose. When the original Luz was destroyed, through the treachery of one of its inhabitants, the man who had introduced the Israelites into the town went into the "land of the Hittites" and built a city which he named after the former one.
Judges Its situation, as well as that of the land of the Hittites," has never been discovered, and is one of the favorable puzzles of Scripture geographers.
